How to choose

Four things decide the right size: what kind of project it is, how much debris it’ll generate, how heavy that debris is, and how long you’ll be working. Most first-time renters only think about the first two — which is exactly how people end up either overpaying for empty space or ordering a second dumpster mid-project.

Size by project

• Garage or spring cleanout — 15-yard. A typical two-car garage purge with room to spare.
• Bathroom remodel — 15-yard. Tile, a vanity, drywall, fixtures. Watch the weight if you’re tearing out a lot of tile or an old cast-iron tub.
• Kitchen remodel — 15-yard for a cabinet-and-counter refresh; 30-yard for a full gut with flooring.

When size isn’t the real problem

Every dumpster has two limits: how much it holds (volume, in cubic yards) and how much it can weigh (tonnage). Landfills charge by weight, so every rental includes a tonnage allowance, and anything over is $0.05/lb ($100 per ton) — weighed at the disposal facility, ticket sent to you.

Most household and yard debris is light, so you’ll run out of room before you hit the weight limit. Heavy materials flip that completely:

• Concrete, brick, tile, dirt, and stone are dense enough that a box only half full can already be at the weight limit.
• Roofing shingles run roughly 250–300 lbs per “square” (100 sq ft) — a full tear-off adds up fast.
• Wet debris after a storm weighs far more than dry.
