A remodel makes a mess on its schedule, not yours

Renovations don’t produce debris all at once. Demo day is a flood — cabinets, tile, drywall — and then it trickles for days as the project moves room to room. Hauling that to the dump in your truck, load by load, eats your weekends. A dumpster on the driveway turns “where do I put all this?” into a non-question: you toss as you go, and it disappears when you’re done.

Here’s how to size and plan a dumpster for a Tampa kitchen or bathroom remodel — including the weight trap that catches a lot of renovators.

What a remodel actually throws out

Before you size anything, picture the pile:

• Cabinets and built-ins
• Countertops (laminate, stone, tile)
• Tile and flooring (the heavy stuff)
• Drywall and plaster
• Fixtures — sinks, tubs, toilets, vanities
• Packaging from all the new materials coming in

What size dumpster for a remodel?

For most single-room remodels, the 15-yard is the sweet spot. Step up to a 30-yard for a full gut or when you’re renovating multiple rooms at once.

Watch the weight — tile and stone are sneaky

This is where remodels go over budget. Tile, stone countertops, mortar, and old cast-iron tubs are dense — they hit the dumpster’s weight limit fast, even when there’s plenty of space left. The move: if you’re tearing out a lot of tile or stone, don’t fill the box to the top — load the heavy material low and leave the lighter debris for the upper half.

Time the rental to your project

You don’t have to rent the whole renovation. Two smart approaches:

• Rent for demo week — when the big tear-out happens — then again near the end for the final cleanup.

A remodel generates a few things a standard dumpster can’t take — or charges a flat fee for:

• Paint, solvents, and chemicals — these are household hazardous waste and go to a county HHW drop-off, not the dumpster.
• Refrigerant appliances (old fridge, AC unit): $100/item
• Electronics: $50/item · Tires: $50–$75 each
